What is SS-31?
SS-31 (Elamipretide — Bendavia — MTP-131 (cardiolipin-binding tetrapeptide)) is a 4-amino acid aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide. Aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide concentrating 1000× in the inner mitochondrial membrane by electrostatic and aromatic interactions with cardiolipin. Stabilises cristae architecture, preserves electron transport chain (ETC) complex I–IV organisation, reduces mitochondrial ROS production, and maintains ATP synthesis efficiency under ischemia and oxidative stress.
